Celefest 2009 Band Performance and Practice

On 23 May, my school, ACS (International), held its bi-annual funfair cum carnival on its grounds of 61 Jalan Hitam Manis. This favourable event consisted of students and staff alike working together towards a common goal – to engage members of the general public and ‘family’ schools with the ACS (International) Spirit. Another aim that was also achieved was the raising of funds for the upcoming school building(s) and the charity organisation, Mainly I Love Kids (MILK).

Specifically, my role in this carnival was to provide music for the ‘members of Celefest 09’, staging a performance as a guest band, “The In-House Band”. The band consisted of members – Miles Thng, Ezra Chan, Chloe Yeo and myself. During the carnival, we were allocated two slots – 12.00pm – 12.30pm and 4.40pm - 5.00pm. Thus, for each we arranged and compiled a set-list of a myriad of songs to accommodate the specific ‘community groups’ within our audiences. This consisted of genres such acoustic, rock, dance and alternative.

In preparation for this much anticipated event, our practices were kindly hosted by a parent over both weekends and weekdays. Each session would typically involve us practicing for approximately 4 hours. In all, this was truly an unforgettable experience, and undoubtedly a favourite.

Prefectorial Board 2008-2009 (External Duties)

The ‘external duties’ of the prefectorial board typically involved prefects sacrificing some part of their time, be it lesson time or time outside of school hours. Oftentimes, prefects on duty for events such as Parent- Teacher Meetings would stay in school until 9.30 pm, or stay an entire Saturday afternoon from 11.00 am to 5.00 pm. ‘External duties’ would usually involve a prefect ushering parents or guests of the school to various venues, serving them food and refreshments, and being ambassadors of the school. Indeed, prefects are oftentimes the face of the school.

As the Organisational Head of the Board, I would like to commend each member for their utmost efforts and support in their service to ACS (International). I believe that we, as the 4^th Prefectorial Board, have served our term well and to the best of our abilities, and that we have provided a stronger foundation for the 5^th Prefectorial Board in their term.

Prefectorial Board 2008-2009 (Daily Duties)

Having fulfilled my duties to the best of my abilities, being a prefect in ACS (International) has certainly been one of the highlights of my time as an IB student. My prefectorial term began in April 2008 and ended exactly one year later. Truly, it has been an honour to serve the school, not only as a student, but in particular as one of the 17 prefects in the 4^th Prefectorial Board.

During my term, I was appointed, Organisational Head, a member of the ex-co, on top of my customary role as a ‘prefect’. Specifically, this ex-co position involved myself drafting out daily duty rosters for the entire board on a per-term basis, rosters for external events such as Parent-Teacher Meetings and school performances, and improving on past duty positions. Indeed, this required a significant amount of my time in seeking to find who would best fit their duties and would excel it in, gaining useful experience, and at the same time seeking to give every member of the board a myriad of chances to expose themselves to various duties in the spectrum. Several of these duties consist of the reciting of the national pledge, escorting principals on stage, raising of flags, appearance checks and late-coming records. These duties were adapted from the 3^rd Prefectorial Board, and were innovated on with contributions from the 4^th Prefectorial Board.

The daily duties involved prefects reporting in school before 8.15 am, every morning, with a tie and a strong will to serve the school. At 8.15 am, prefects would go to their respective posts and duty would hence commence. At approximately 8.45 am, prefects would report to the hall for the remainder of assembly and duty would officially conclude at 9.00 am.

All in all, I have learnt that there is so much more than meets the eye with the role of a prefect. Although it may not seem so, the prefectorial board is the backbone of a school’s discipline and welfare. I have learnt that an individual’s skills are nothing without effective enforcement and teamwork, and that we as prefects are role models for the school 24/7. Without prefects, rules cannot be enforced. Without enforcement, rules are but nothing. And without rules comes a reign of chaos.

Boys’ Contact Rugby A Division Training

Rugby has been one of the most memorable and favourable aspects of my high school life. It has most certainly morphed my character into a becoming teammate and individual. ACS (International)’s development and interest in its rugby team has exacerbated in recent months.

Training for this year’s A Division has placed my view of rugby in a much brighter light. It has evolved into a level of incomparable intensity. Trainings were typically held on the school field, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 4.30 pm to 6.30 pm. This season, I was trained as a second-row – I learnt new skills and developed a stronger mindset for the game and was able to apply these to my new position. Prior to this, I had favoured playing the role of ‘flanker’. However, this episode has taught me that it is not the position of a player that matters, but the way in which the player playing that position is able to compliment the rest of the team. Undoubtedly, I would not hesitate at another opportunity to play the great game of rugby.

Student Council 2008-2009 (2)

“I hope to learn more from those more experienced than myself, in terms of organizing events and such. I hope to establish better or stronger relationships on behalf of the student council with both the local and foreign population of ACS (International), and in turn be the bridge between both.” – These were my aims and expectations of both the 4^th student council and, more importantly, my role in it.

Having completed three terms of office in council, I am honoured to have played a part in the most outstanding council yet – the 4^th student council of ACS (International). The events, such as Spring Dance and Wii Games Day, which we organised from scratch has indeed surpassed even our own expectations.

Although we faced our share of hardships, disagreements and hitches during our term, we managed to take away more than just the subdued and unpretentious mistakes and failures, learning from them and adopting a positive attitude in dealing with whatever came our way. Without the support of our wise and caring supervising teachers, Mr. Ronald Lim and Ms. Cheryl Seah, we would not have been able to carry through with our many responsibilities. Moreover, without the peer support from the distinguished students of ACS (International) and fellow members within our council, we would not have achieved such success. Although a council is often perceived to be the backbone of a school, it can only function successfully with the genuine support and cooperation of the student body and members of staff.

In addition, during our term, we received a bountiful, and oftentimes seemingly limitless, amount of help from the school’s Parent-Support-Partners. The 4^th Student Council worked alongside them to achieve success of events such as Family Fiesta. In turn, we have established long-term relationships and bonds with them and we have vowed to help in future events extending beyond our term of office, in honour of the school.

Undoubtedly, I would gladly indulge myself in this recent term’s experiences and highlights again. I strongly feel that as a united council, we have yielded the torch proudly bearing the name of ACS (International) and have indeed been “the bridge between” more than just within the school, but between other schools and even nations. Now that we have passed on the torch to the 5^th Student Council, with bated breath, we can only expect a greater harvest because “the best is yet to be”.

In my view, a student council’s role in a school system is to serve the student body, encompassing issues such as welfare and school spirit, through the first-rate organisation of events which encourage them. Further, student councilors are far beyond role models. Effectively, along with certain parties, they make the backbone of the school. Specifically, in ACS (International), the student council goes beyond all means not only to ensure that the student body has a greater sense of school spirit, but also that each individual member of the school – be it teaching-staff, non-teaching staff or student – attains the well-deserved, unique and memorable bliss of school life.

The 4^th Student Council sought high and low, beneath each rock, around each corner, to achieve the above description of a truly effective student council. Hosting a myriad of events on a regular basis such as Spring Dance, Prom, Orientation, Casual Dress Day, Teacher’s Day and more, we attempted to strengthen and establish bonds between members of the student population, delighting in the incomparable efforts we put in. I believe I speak for everyone when I say this – we have achieved so much more.

I saw my role as a student councilor as something greater than a leadership position; I saw it as an opportunity to effect change in ACS (International). Indeed, having ended my term, I am proud of the work achieved by the 4^th Student Council of ACS (International). We have certainly achieved boundless heights – a benchmark of standards proclaiming the ‘sound of ACS forever’.

Orientation Block-out Dates (Preparation)

From 27 December to 13 January, a committee of specially selected individuals were allowed to be a part of ACS (International)’s annual Orientation program at the beginning of the year. As a member of the 4^th Student Council, let alone an ordinary student, Orientation is a much anticipated event in our calendar. In order to carry out a ‘saccharine’ balance of school tradition and contemporary ideas, we exercised extreme wisdom in choosing the committee whom would represent the face of ACS (International); one which would do our school proud.

As the vice camp-commandant of Orientation 2009, I was involved in a particularly fair amount of administration matters pertaining to this event. Furthermore, I offered my two cents worth during executive-committee discussions, oftentimes designing games, organizing programs and positions alike. Although this could, in many senses, be defined as a taxing and crucial role in any event, especially Orientation 2009, I found much satisfaction and relief when ‘backstage’ matters had been settled.

The purpose of block-out preparation dates during our school holidays was to ensure the best execution of Orientation 2009 as possible. In total, we were fully equipped with an exceptionally capable committee of around 60 students across different levels, each of whom we believed had the potential to carry Orientation 2009 to a bright success in a most memorable and desirable manner.

During the block-out dates, we performed several tasks, some as a full committee, and others as respectively designated groups – logistics, games and Orientation Group Leaders (OGLs). Amongst these were games, both dry and wet, which we ran through several times to ensure the highest level of safety of the orientees and the most fun possible. Additionally, we had to learn two mass dances and, as an OGL, an OGL-item. Synchronized dances of such sorts are deemed to be part of tradition in ACS schools around Singapore. Through countless practice sessions and choreographies, we found ourselves tired more often than not. Yet, we would constantly feel a blissful sense of happiness, contentment and belonging; and personally, I believe it was this which drew us closer together as a committee, pulling us toward our common goal.

On 27 and 29 December and 13 January, we arranged for the committee to gather logistics items around Singapore to provide for the vast number of games and welfare of the orientees. Included in the block-out dates was an Orientation Committee camp from 5 – 7 January, to conduct long game sessions such as the Ultimate Game around the area of our school and the Night Game, which could only adequately be conducted under realistic conditions. Moreover, this camp served as an intensive bonding session for the entire committee, establishing new friendships and building on existing ones. The block-out dates have helped me realize that there is more to than what meets the eye with each and every individual.

Orientation 2009 Introduction

To say Orientation merely helps one to settle into new school surroundings might be true for many other schools – but here at ACS (International), that is an understatement. It is the very highlight of ACS (International)’s yearly calendar. And the mark it makes on our students; never, ever goes away.

Even now, 3 years after I went through my very own Orientation, we still share laughs and conversations about what happened back in Orientation then. It is one of those things which you will remember and build your whole school life upon.

When you step into the School Hall for the very first time, you feel much more comfortable when everyone is new, just like you. And the only time everyone would be new would obviously be during Orientation! It will take a lot of effort, for some, to utter the very first words to a fellow Orientee, a complete stranger. But, from that point on, Orientation just flies by amidst the fun, games and laughs. Before you know it, you feel like you known that very same person your whole life. But the best part is that it is not only that one person, it is a whole group of friends that you get to know!

On the sleepover on the last day, you catch yourself thinking ‘I can’t believe this is all going to end so soon’ and that is when you know how comfortable you are with your new school, ACS (International). Trust me, you would feel that way.

There is only so much that can be expressed by words and maybe these words did not do Orientation as much justice as it is due. With that said, you have to experience Orientation yourself to see what I mean.

Student Council service trip to Yun Nan, China (1)

The 4^th Student Council of ACS (International) decided that, as an act of service to the greater global community and a step forward within ACS (International)’s student group efforts, we would embark on a service-based trip to Yun Nan, China from 23 to 29 November 2008. Our main purpose for this trip was to visit a village and school far inland Yun Nan, to educate students aged 7 to 12 and help in the construction of a new basketball court. Specifically, the 9 of us wished to address issues pertaining to personal hygiene such as dental care, and we wished to further teach the English language, both within and beyond the syllabus.

Through this trip, I have learnt that it is in the moments of distress in which we find our true inner-selves. Our limits are trampled upon, directing us out of our comfort zone into an unfamiliar and malicious world. It is in these moments where we discover our infinite being, where maybe we weren’t who we thought we were. For each of us, it is a revelation in our own time.

We’ve been placed, willingly or not, but most definitely helplessly, into surroundings crowding with unfamiliarity; pushing our senses, engaging us in conversations or feelings we would not otherwise or even come close to partake in. Indefinitely, it’s all a part of the ride of life. We couldn’t possibly know whether we’ll find ourselves a happily ever after, or an album of storms brewing. In every sense of it, we may fill our hearts with the utmost quality of distaste and irritation. We could even shun from the warmth the sunlight brings only so we can endure the peace and comfort of sleep for a mere instant longer. But is this all there is? Could there be answers hidden in corners we dare not look in? Could we find ourselves in time, if we only take a small step of faith? Could there be a new found glory, a new love, beyond our doorstep, or beneath the soles of our feet? Step out, reach out, and call out. If not now, when?

This simple trip to China has taught me that there is truly more to life than what lies at our doorstep. I have learnt that something apparently so simple in our eyes may make a world of difference to someone else. China has proven itself immensely that it is a challenge for each of us. No doubt difficulty lies at each dawn and dusk, but it is a choice we have to make – how would we choose to take on this hurdle? Some may wither away in their fear to leave their comfort zone, afraid of what is buried beneath their very own skin. Others crave adventure and deliver every ounce of energy at their own free will. For myself, I yearn for experience; I wish to encounter genuine happiness, each time unique in its own way. I would give whatever I can just to have someone else benefit. Yet, I still struggle to step out of the boat with a free heart. I find an especially high barrier in the lack of efficient communication between the children and myself. At times, I am even submerged, drowning in a sea of trials, helpless. However, with the short time spent in YunNan, I craved and developed a greater determination to be a better being on this planet. Hopefully, that was enough to prove myself to the children that there is a brighter light within each of us.

Preparation for Student Council service trip to Yun Nan, China

In order to achieve the above successfully, we had to conduct several training sessions as a student council. This was done under the supervision of our council teacher – Mr. Ronald Lim. Firstly; we had to ensure that we covered all logistic issues such as teaching materials, toothbrushes, toothpaste and telematch equipment. Most of these items were purchased in Yun Nan herself as we had a tight budget to keep to. Secondly, during our training sessions we would prepare lesson plans for English classes of different level groups. This involved discussions amongst us; for instance how advanced to we set our lesson plan and how much material we would require such as colour pencils. Lastly, we had to ensure that we could converse easily in mandarin so as to reduce any communication barriers. This involved us learning common terms which would prove useful during lessons.

Tchoukball Inter-class Sports Module 2008

Tchoukball is played with two 'rebound frames'. These frames measure 90 centimetres square and are situated at both ends of the court. A line runs 3 metres from the centre of the bottom of the frame around in a semi-circle. This area is called the 'D' or 'forbidden zone'. The court size varies greatly depending on the ages of the players; a full size international standard court is 40m by 20m in size. Unlike most other team games you can score at both ends. Players fall into 3 categories: Wingers, Forward Pivots and Centre Pivots. To score a point the ball must be thrown at the end so that it lands over the line of the D.

From the 18th of September through the 9th of October, our school organized an inter-class Tchoukball competition. This involved the 5 class in our standard, each playing every other class once.

My class, 5X, managed to emerge 3rd from the boys-division in this competition. However, we did not set our sights on winning alone – we believed that Tchoukball was more about sportsmanship and teamwork. Thus, we did not focus our attention solely on the ‘better’ players in our class, but worked on the basis and idea of giving everyone a chance. To prepare ourselves for this event, we trained for one session of about 1.5 hours. The aim of this session was to introduce the game of Tchoukball to those who have not yet been exposed to it from other sports modules or competitions alike.

In the process of training for this event, we faced several difficulties. It was difficult for the more experienced players in my class to adequately train every member of the class in the short period of time given. Furthermore, we were only provided with one ball, further narrowing our time-constraints. However, we managed to overcome this and make do with what we had. We devised several training modules ourselves and managed to successfully execute them, allowing each member to have a general idea of the rules of Tchoukball and how it is meant to be played.
Furthermore, because of my experience in the sport, I volunteered myself to play the role of the referee in other classes’ games. I made this decision as I felt it would benefit the year cohort as a whole as team players would be able to be more aware of the rules and game-play of Tchoukball. In addition, I felt that it would benefit me because of the experience I would gain from a different perspective of the game.

Despite Tchoukball being a relatively new sport, many are unaware and apathetic towards the true benefits it has. I believe that the school’s effort in introducing this sport to us as a general cohort has truly proven itself to be the right decision.

Tchoukball Tournament 2008

On the 28^th of September 2008, our school’s Tchoukball team took part in the NLB / SSC Tchoukball Challenge 2008. Our team consisted of 6 players, including myself. Prior to this competition, we trained across a period of several days, inclusive of one intensive 3-hour training on Friday, the 26^th of September 2008.

Though we have little experience in this upcoming and thrilling sport, we put our hearts into our game and managed to emerge fourth out of 8 teams, which is, personally, very commendable, considering the fact that we were put up against tough National Teams such as the Fiery Warriors and other non-academic institutions. This is certainly a memorable and heart-felt achievement and I believe we have done our school proud.

In the process of training for this event, we faced several difficulties. It was difficult for us to find a common training slot due to our heavy work schedule on the parts of each of us. However, with the inspiration from our team captain, Shamus Hwang, we managed to agree on certain time slots, sacrificing time for our exam preparations which were mere weeks away at that point of time. Despite Tchoukball being a relatively new sport, many are unaware and apathetic towards the true benefits it has. I believe that the school’s effort in introducing this sport to us in the first place has truly proven itself to be the right decision. Our team will undoubtedly strive to achieve better in future competitions. However, to do this, the presence of a coach or qualified supervisor would assist us in an exceedingly significant way.

Tchoukball Module

The sport is played on an indoor court measuring forty meters by twenty meters (130 feet x 65 feet). At each end there is a 'frame' (a device similar to a trampoline off which the ball bounces) which measures one square meter and a semi-circular 'D' measuring three meters (10 feet) out from the frame in all directions. Each team can score on both ends on the field, and comprises twelve players, of which nine may be on the court at any one time. In order to score a point, the ball must be thrown by an attacking player, hit the frame and bounce outside the 'D' without being caught by the defending team. Physical contact is prohibited, and defenders may not attempt to intercept the attacking team's passes. Players may take three steps with the ball, hold the ball for a maximum of three seconds, and teams may not pass the ball more than three times before shooting at the frame.

This module took place in Term Three of my school year, from 3 July to 14 August 2008.

The first week of our module involved students getting familiar with the sport. We handled the ball and were introduced to the rules of the game. We experienced a ‘round’ of Tchoukball and realized that there was more to it than met the eye. In the following weeks, we learnt various ways of shooting, defending, passing, faking and moving on court. We observed how the result of our shots not only depended on different levels of strengths, but also the angle at which it is shot. The position I played during most sessions was that of the ‘left-winger’. This involved an entire half of the left flank, and required me to both make shots and catch balls. After several games, I realized that being left-handed had given me a natural advantage over others.

This sports module has enabled me to learn and develop a completely new skill. I have learnt how to control my strength and that it really isn’t all about power. I have also learnt how teamwork achieves success. For example, if I feel that I am unable to make the shot, I shouldn’t feel the pressure to make it. It is important that I pass the ball on (whether through faking or not) to my other winger, who may have a better angle, to give a point to the team. I have also gained a significant amount of experience. On 9th August, a group of students and I participated in an inter-team tchoukball tournament. We faced several more experienced players, and teams with skills of a completely greater level. However, we took this in stride and learnt from their strategies and experience. In the tournament, our school came in 6th. I have learnt that indeed, “The objective of human physical activities is not to make champions, but make a contribution to building a harmonious society”.

I feel that this module should be opened up as a Co-curricular Activity so that others may, too, experience what I have in the past few weeks. Several members of the Tchoukball Association of Singapore were brought in to coach us, to teach us, to pass on the spirit of a beautiful sport – tchoukball.

Rugby Training Session

I've always felt a unique surge, a rush, of adrenaline playing rugby. I see it as an escape from the confinements of the cyclical activities of each day's dosage of stress and unfavourable events. Truly, today's training session was no exception.

Typically, we started out with a few 'conversions' and then rounds around the field. Without further ado, we began our dynamic stretches and quick feet exercises. I've always seen this as a particularly effective team bonding session in disguise. With everybody in synchronised movements, throughly enjoying ourselves as a team, its difficult not to feel the 'ACS Spirit' within us.

Our next period involved the team splitting up into forwards and backs. My position as a flanker or second-row, depending on the situation, would invariably involve the scrum. We would practice this for what seemed like years, until our pack achieved the right and balanced amount of force, allowing for effective scrumming in future matches. In addition to this, we would do line-outs. Usually, I would be assigned the role of either front jumper or back jumper. Needless to say, this took a lot of practice, and a lot of time. Indeed, perfecting our line-out techniques and interweaving this with successful catches is no easy task.

After countless practices, we would regroup and conduct several team-runs as a full 15 team. We would especially practice our rucking abilities, trying to shorten the time between the tackle and the team's support. Essentially, this was the main crux of our team's gameplay and strategy.

Despite these physically draining activities, I would emerge from the field with a sense of accomplishment because not only was this a means of relieving stress, but also a means of enjoying myself with friends and coaches alike. Truly, rugby is incomparable.

Prefect and Student Council Leadership Training Camp to Bintan

This activity involved the prefect board and the 4^th Student Council of the school. From 20 – 21 June 2008, we boarded a ferry from the Singapore terminal to the terminal at Bintan. This activity involved us learning to work better as a team, through games, activities and scenarios alike. On Day 1, we participated in ice-breakers from 10am to slightly after noon. We played several games which involved innovative thinking and intense teamwork to achieve success. We managed to relate to the games and work to the best of our abilities, as a team. From 2pm to 6pm, we engaged in a ‘race’ around the coast of the island, involving stops along the way, challenging our teamwork and navigational skills. At the same time, we remembered to indulge ourselves in heaps of fun. On that night, we took part in a night trek on the Wakatobi Trail for two hours. This activity aimed to help us overcome our fears and help us realize more about who we are. On Day 2, we participated in the Team Challenge Pyramid. This involved a 25-meter high structure, which we were required to scale as a team of 5 or 6. This challenged our fears to the limit. We learnt more about ourselves and about others, and how we can help one another achieve our goal, be it in terms of mental encouragement or physical strength. Following this activity, we played a round of paintball.

From this activity, I have learnt that we should focus on others as well and not just on ourselves. I have learnt that because we work as a team, we are accountable to one another. At times, we have to make sacrifices in order to benefit the team as a whole. Specifically, through the Team Challenge Pyramid, I have learnt that a team is only as fast as its slowest man and that if one falls, everyone else falls together. From the night trek, I have learnt that fear is an illusion everyone can conquer, no matter how big. On the whole, I have learnt that we can use each person’s unique and special strength to our team’s benefit. If I were to do this activity again, I would improve on my planning and organization skills and I would encourage more people and be more sensitive to them.

IBDP Service Trip to Chiang Mai 2008

A group of 22 students, myself included, from my school visited Chiang Mai from 25th – 29th May, the first week of our mid-year break. This activity involved the provision of our service, mainly educational, to 28 students, aged 4 – 11 years, in a village in Ban Pha Mon. The school, adopted by the Raffles City Rotary Club in Singapore, at which we were situated at for our period of service, was located on a mountain several thousand feet above sea level.

The first day of our trip involved mainly travelling. Upon arrival at the school, we unpacked our belongings, planned our lessons for the following couple of days and were provided with dinner and accommodation. On the following day, we were introduced to the children and we mingled with them for about an hour, playing soccer, talking with them, etc. When mid-morning arrived, we began lessons with them. The 22 of us were divided into three groups (prior to the trip itself) and each group undertook approximately 10 students, arranged according to their level of education. During lessons, we taught them the English language with the help of picture cards, physical symbols such as airplanes and animals, assessment books and coloring activities. When lessons had ended, we planned for our last day of teaching. We agreed to follow up on several effective lesson activities such as the picture cards. Also, we participated actively in area cleaning. This involved the cleaning of toilets, dishes, classrooms and floors. On our last day, we taught for a good amount of time, much similar to the day before, and we planned and practiced our cultural performance in whatever remaining time we had. We also trekked down the mountain to visit a plantation area. When night had fallen, we walked into the main village to give our performance – singing two culturally-focused songs with actions. We participated in the sparklers and fireworks, and lantern celebrations. Furthermore, we gave out our tokens of appreciation – picture-frames with pictures taken over the past couple of days. This was also when we passed on our donations of clothes and stuffed-toys to the families within the village.

In this activity, I feel that I have accomplished what I set out to do. This trip to Chiang Mai has allowed me to realize more about myself and others around me which I would not have otherwise had. I have accomplished our main goal, which was to educate the school children to the best of our abilities, through planned lessons and activities. I also feel that through this trip, I have established fresh bonds with the school children and have learnt more about the culture of Thais and their way of life. In this trip, I experienced several difficulties, which I overcame in the end. I demolished the face of fear and standard of living in terms of accommodation and hygiene. I was able to endure, without much complaining, whatever came our way. Furthermore, when we had a hitch in our lesson plan, we acted quickly and wisely so as to achieve happiness, prosperity and progress for all.

I have learnt, from this activity, more about other parts of the world and that things are not always as they seem. I have learnt and understood that life without love is nothing. I have learnt to be modest and humble when it comes to all things. I have achieved the ability to meet challenges, big and small, and that it is not so much that result that counts, but more the process in achieving it.

This activity was supervised by Mr. Charles Png and Ms. Ng Sho Ching, two members of academic teaching staff. They assisted in the planning of lessons and the approval of proposals. They also donated a color printer to the school in Chiang Mai. They organized meetings and assisted in being the backbone to this activity.

This activity benefitted both parties, those in Chiang Mai and the 22 of us. We understood more about each other, I believe, and that we have helped and changed each other, be it in a small way or big way. If I were to do this activity again, I would request more time with the children, perhaps the role of not solely teaching, but more bonding and making a physical change to the school.

Beyond Social Services

Beyond Social Services, service module

This activity involved my class, 5X, and our service to Beyond Social Services, an educational childcare center, located at Blk 120 Bukit Merah View. We helped with the cleaning and washing up of, and gardening chores within the center. In this activity, we hoped to provide service to a community which needed it. We aspired to give back what we could to community. We accomplished cleaning up toys that the children at the center used; we washed their toothbrushes and windows, and planted several new seedlings in their garden. We visited the premises every Saturday for a term’s length in the months of March, April and May 2008.

In the process of this activity, it was hard to find every student from our class to be available each week. Therefore, we decided to split the class up into three groups, hence each group would go once every three weeks.

From this activity, I’ve learnt that it is better to give than to receive, and that it is important to give back to the community. I’ve learnt new skills such as the mass washing of toys.

This activity benefitted my class, the Beyond Social Services center and the community. If I were to repeat this activity, I would ask for a greater variety of chores or jobs for us to do.

Prefect and Council Leadership Camp Term 2 2008

This leadership camp was held for prefects and councilors with the aim of enriching them with a stronger school spirit and vision and to be a better role model to others around them. This camp was held on the 4th and 5th of April 2008, including a one-night sleepover in the school. The camp commenced at 3.30pm on Friday, the 4th, and ended at 2.30pm on Saturday, the 5th. Due to a rugby match prior to the camp, I was only able to join the rest of the councilors and prefects at 7pm. At the time I arrived, I attended a talk by Vice Principal, Mr. Png, relating to the theme/topic of “vision” both within ourselves and for the school. We made mind maps and brainstormed ideas, which we later presented; that we thought would help us convey our sense of “vision”.

Following this, we participated in a series of leadership games, carrying the message of the importance of communication, planning and others alike. This was both a time of bonding and a time of learning and experiencing.

The following day, we woke up at 6.30am. We had a couple of sessions led by Mr. Ronald Lim, and Sia BingXi and Stephanie A. Chuah, which taught us even more about the ways to achieve consistent and good leadership. From this activity, I have learnt more about myself and about those in both the prefectorial board and the 4th Student Council. This event benefitted the Year 5 members of the prefectorial board and the 4th Student Council, both of which I am part of. I feel that this activity will, in the long run, contribute to our ability to relate and establish bonds with similar committees and boards from other schools alike.

Mad-hatter’s Tea Party Celebration 2008

The Mad-hatter’s Tea Party was held, introduced and organized by the Parents Support Group for the Year 1 group of students in our school. This activity was focused mainly on Edward DeBono’s “Six Thinking Hats”, introducing to the students the different significances (in an educational sense) each hat has. This activity was held after school hours on 31st March 2008 from 3.30pm to 5.30pm.

I was asked by a parent whether my band and I would like to provide the “live music” at the event, alongside a similar performance. We played a myriad of genres of songs – CrushCrushCrush by Paramore, That Thing You Do by The Wonders, Sweet Child ‘O Mine by Guns N’ Roses, Life Is a Highway by Rascal Flatts and Crazy Little Thing Called Love by Queen – to accommodate both the students and the Parents Group.

In preparation for this performance, my band and I practiced twice only as the songs were reasonably familiar to each of us. We practiced on 30th March 2008 at the Beat Merchants’ Studio in the vicinity of Arab Street from the hours of 3pm to 6pm. This contributed to most of our practice time; however we felt that this was sufficient as we felt we sounded decent. Our actual performance lasted one hour (4.30pm to 5.30pm).

In the process of preparing for this activity, I felt that I had a large load of school and other co-curricular work, resulting in some difficulty in time management. Also, we have yet to embrace the benefits and discipline of practicing in advance. This resulted in us ‘rushing’ a bit during our individual practice sessions at home.

From this activity, I have learnt to play for a different crowd and have learnt that discipline and focus is key in such events. The year 1 students, my band and myself were those who benefited from this activity.

If I were to do this activity again, I would arrange more practice sessions and may change the choice of songs.

Spring Dance Band Performance 2008

On the 11th of February, the band auditions for Spring Dance 2008 were held in the school multi-purpose hall. In this set of auditions, a number of bands competed for the three available places for the actual Spring Dance Band Performance, held on 7th March. In the process of preparing for the auditions to clinch a place in the three, we practiced for four sessions, one hour each from our lunch and breaks, in our school’s music room, under the permission of Miss Carol Ling.

After the auditions, it was announced that my band, Ruffles (formerly Pipe Dream), was one of the three bands chosen. Having heard this piece of news, we practiced further at the Beat Merchants’ Studio along Jalan Pinang, for another four sessions, this time three hours each. On the 6th of March, the school required us to take part in the full dress rehearsal after school, for Spring Dance.

On the actual day, the 7th of March, we were the first band to play and our performance lasted around 30 minutes and onwards due to sound-checking.

We hoped to entertain the student population with music at this school event. In the process of this, we found it hard to have all members of the band present at every practice session. In the earlier stages of preparation, we felt that we were not going to be ready enough for the auditions and may not get a place. There was also the difficulty of the choice of songs. But eventually, we managed to overcome this problem as a band.

From this activity, I’ve learnt more about the importance of preparation and the different talents and personalities of the members of the band. I also learnt new songs and skills with the guitar and my ability to work with a band.

This activity benefitted the student population and the overall success of Spring Dance 2008. If we were to do this activity again, we would choose not to be the first band to perform and we would prepare our songs sooner.

Softball Module 2008 Term 1

Softball is played between 2 teams on a large field called a diamond, comprised of a dirt infield and a grass outfield. There are 4 bases on the infield (first base, second base, third base, home plate); the bases are arranged in a square and are typically 45 to 60 feet apart. Near the center of this square is the pitcher's circle. The object of the game is to score more runs than the other team by batting a ball into play and running around the bases, touching each one in succession.

The module took place across the months of January, Feburary and March. The first week of this module involved us learning the basic rules and techniques of softball, both pitching and batting alike. We were able to familiarize ourselves with the above mentioned in the following weeks. In week two, three and four, we practiced ‘pepper batting’ and various kinds of ways to receive, or catch, a ball, it being high or low. However, I was physically inept during week two and three due to an external event. In the last few weeks of the module, we were introduced to the real game of softball, as described above. In the final week, we played a proper game of softball, managing only two innings, but with the aim of three, due to time constraints.

In the period of this activity, I have achieved many things. Firstly, I have exposed myself to learning and experiencing the game of softball. I believe and hope that these few sessions will benefit me in my later life, should I choose to take up this sport again, or one similar to it – baseball. Secondly, I have learnt to work as a team, not only in the sense of how ‘batters’ are arranged, but also in whom to pass the ball to. With this, I have learnt to use my options wisely. Lastly, I feel that I have learnt humility, and that not everyone can be the best at everything. At the end of this module, I feel that I have actually learnt more than what I have set out to achieve.

During this module, I faced the difficulty of not being able to participate in more rigorous activity for the two weeks I was injured.

Mr. Justin Teh, the head of this module, not only made these sessions, but also the sport, and even more interesting and convivial experience for us.

Class Devotion 2008

CAS Activity: Class Devotion 2008 - "Modern Slavery"

This activity required my class, 5X, to work together with the common aim which was to produce a video decent enough to portray the theme of Modern Slavery. This video would be shown and explained to the entire school on the 27th of March. The purpose of such an activity proposed by the school would be to expose and educate the school to matters regarding modern slavery; to increase awareness amongst the student body about such issues.

In the process of making the video, besides the plot of the video, we had to decide the number of students that were to be directly involved and the venue of the video-shoot. In a matter of one week, we decided that it would involve approximately 15 students, and would be held at my house.

On the 16th of February, approximately 16 students came to my house to produce the video. We spent a total of 4 hours making the video. This time also included lunch as the time period was from 11am to 3pm, which collated to about 45 minutes. In this time, we faced several difficulties. Besides those relating to technicalities, we found it hard to organize scenes which involved the entire amount of people who were present at that particular time.

In the process of this activity, I learnt more about the characters of my classmates, and how they used the idea of teamwork to make this a fun and memorable success. If I could do this activity again, I would make use of a better quality video camera and limit the number of people actually needed. Also, I would request for a more appropriate theme, to match, or rather abide in, the Methodist name of our school.

Chinese New Year 2008

CAS Activity: Chinese New Year Class Decorations/Class Fashion Show 2008

This Chinese New Year, I, as an individual, have learnt things considered priceless. One of the many things was the teamwork achieved in many aspects. A few of the class went to Chinatown on the 29th of January to make purchases for our decorations. It amazed me as to how students both old and new could become such a strong team, agreeing on how to spend our budget and on what. When it came to decorating the class from the 29th of January to the 31st of January, a good majority of the class stayed back after-school-hours and even during break hours making unique and interesting crafts. On the 1st of February, the judges of each cohort went around each classroom and graded them according to their schemes. My class presented and explained the various decorations in a vibrant and colourful manner. We accomplished everything we'd hoped for, except for being the winning class, which wasn't what we were all about to begin with. We worked as a team; as a class. We put together our best efforts and made our class what was beautiful in our eyes. We bonded and got to know one another better and have since been better friends. We encountered a few difficulties during our decorations as our classroom was one of the biggest and we found it hard to fill the entire room with crafts. However, there was never one point in time that we felt we were failing to achieve what we set out for. During this activity, our form tutor, Miss Ng Sho Ching, was a great help to the class. She stayed back whenever we stayed back and joined in the class spirit. I feel that this activity benefitted the class as a whole in terms of teamwork and a better understanding of one another. It also benefitted the physical appearance of the school. If I could do this activity again, I would involve the entire class and would perhaps give a stronger attempt at trying for winning class.

On the 6th of February, our class participated in our school's Chinese New Year Fashion Show Celebration. Four members from our class 'show-cased' ourselves in our traditional Chinese costumes. In this, we managed to have fun and we learnt sportsmanship. We encountered difficulties in this activity. We couldn't find costumes for some people due to late notice and one of us fell sick, but still made his attendance. If we could have done this activity again, I would've purchased a better outfit to better represent my class.

This 2008, I hope to play a more significant and effective role in the team of 15. By this I mean learning to play a new position, once I have perfected my present role as a 'flanker'. To achieve this, I aim to attend trainings whenever possible (specifically more than 75% of all trainings). I make this statement because of my other committments such as student council and my personal health and well-being. In terms of competitive spirit, I hope to make the cut for the B Div' bowl championship and to advance further than the quarter-finals, which the team achieved last year. Amongst all this, I hope to forge stronger bonds with the rest of the team and to maintain my fitness all year round.
